CNC machining removes material from metal or plastic stock to create accurate, repeatable components. It is a practical choice for functional prototypes, fixtures, bridge production and end-use parts where molded tooling is not justified.
CNC milling
Milling is suited to housings, brackets, plates, manifolds and parts dominated by planar or sculpted features. We review tool access, setup count, internal corner radii and datum strategy before selecting the machining approach.
3-axis strategies
Efficient for plates, pockets, drilled patterns and parts whose critical features can be reached from a limited number of orientations.
Multi-axis strategies
Useful when angled features, compound surfaces or reduced setup count improve accuracy and manufacturability.
CNC turning
Turning is used for components whose primary geometry is rotational: shafts, pins, sleeves, spacers and threaded bodies. Cross-holes, flats and other milled features may be combined where equipment and geometry allow.
Tolerance approach
There is no responsible universal tolerance for every feature and material. General dimensions should use a sensible drawing standard; critical fits, bores, threads and datum-related features should be called out individually. Tighter requirements are reviewed for tool access, thermal stability, measurement method and cost.
Recommended file package
| File | What it communicates | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| STEP / STP | Nominal 3D geometry | Preferred neutral CAD format |
| PDF drawing | Tolerances, datums, threads, finish and notes | Required for controlled features |
| Visual reference | Cosmetic zones, grain or masking | Useful for appearance-critical parts |
| Revision note | Change history and current release | Include for repeat orders |
When CNC machining is a good fit
- Functional prototypes in production-intent material.
- Low- and medium-volume parts without dedicated tooling.
- Jigs, fixtures, end effectors and test equipment.
- Bridge production while molded or cast tooling is prepared.
- Replacement or legacy parts with controlled drawings.
